You know about the US Marines' massacre of a couple of dozen civillians in
Haditha.
Here's how the first Marine to tell his story is spinning it.

According to the terrorist, his convoy hit a land mine, and they "returned
fire".
Of course, that's just irrational - it doesn't make any sense.
You can't return fire against a land mine.
In fact, what happened was that after they hit the mine, they saw someone in
the distance near some houses watching them.
They were so angry and confused that they decided to hunt that man down.
So they broke into one house after another, shooting "clearing fire".
That's US military code for "firing blindly".
They shot up the people's home, then they broke in and killed the
surviviors.
Then, when they finished with one house, they went on to the next.
Sometimes, before entering the house, they threw a grenade into it.
According to the Seargent's own story - that behaviour was totally
legitimate.
He says that was what he was paid to do, and that's why he did it.
He does not feel that he broke any rules because, let's face it, the only
goal in this war IS the war.
Haditha.
